Arthritis in dogs: adapting their daily routine and rest

Regular gentle exercise, the right support and maintaining a healthy weight.

Arthritis is common in older dogs. Although it cannot be cured, its progression and symptoms can be significantly reduced. Three things make the greatest difference: weight, consistent exercise and quality rest.

Weight Every extra kilogram places additional strain on the joints. For most dogs, losing ten per cent of their body weight leads to a noticeable improvement in mobility within a few weeks.

Shorter, more frequent exercise Three shorter walks on level ground each day are better than one long walk at the weekend. Avoid stairs and jumping out of the car wherever possible.

Support that does not collapse Hard floors increase pressure on the elbows and hips, while overly soft filling makes it harder to get up. A thicker, medium-firm foam core offers the ideal balance.

Warmth Cold conditions worsen stiffness. Place the bed away from draughts and add a blanket in winter.

Working with your vet Supplements, anti-inflammatory treatment and physiotherapy can all help, but should always be based on a professional assessment. If your dog begins to limp or refuses to get up, do not wait to seek advice.
