French Bulldog: A Bed for a Dog That Overheats Easily

The French Bulldog is a brachycephalic breed — its shortened muzzle limits its ability to cool down through panting. This has a direct impact on where and what they sleep on.

Temperature is the key consideration Avoid thick plush fillings and enclosed cave beds during the warmer months. A breathable foam core with a smooth cover is ideal, positioned away from direct sunlight and radiators.

Burrowing At the same time, this breed enjoys feeling snug and enclosed. A good compromise is a bed with a low bolster and a separate lightweight blanket that your dog can pull over themselves during the cooler months.

Size and support An adult French Bulldog weighs 9 to 13 kg. They do not need a large sleeping area, but they do need a supportive surface — the breed is prone to back problems, and soft, flattened filling offers little help. A core around 6 cm deep is suitable.

Breathing during sleep Snoring is common in this breed, but pauses in breathing are not. If your dog gasps for air in their sleep or has to sit up to breathe, seek veterinary advice.

Hygiene Skin folds and sensitive skin mean the cover should be washed regularly using fragrance-free products.
