Keeping a home with a dog clean without unnecessary chemicals

A simple routine that keeps your home clean without harming your dog.

A home shared with a dog does not have to smell like one. Four simple habits will take care of most of the problem.

A weekly routine Vacuum twice a week in the rooms where your dog sleeps. Wipe their paws after every walk in wet weather. Wash the bed cover once a month and the bowls every day.

Odours The filling of a dog bed, rather than its cover, is often the source of unwanted odours. Choose a bed with a washable cover and a foam core, which absorbs less than loose fibre filling.

Cleaning products Use chlorine-free, lightly scented or fragrance-free products in areas your dog can access. For accidents, enzymatic cleaners are more effective than disinfectants — they break down the source of the odour rather than simply masking it.

Textiles and visitors A spare bed cover and a washable blanket for the sofa will take care of most last-minute situations before guests arrive.

Safety Keep cleaning products out of reach, and after mopping the floors, allow them to dry before letting your dog back into the room.
