Mattress or bolster bed? How to choose

The shape of a dog bed is not simply a matter of aesthetics. It determines whether your dog can settle into their favourite sleeping position without anything getting in the way.

When a mattress makes sense A flat mattress is the most versatile option. It suits dogs that like to stretch out on their side, large breeds, long-legged dogs and older dogs that need to sit down and get up easily without stepping over a raised edge. A mattress also fits more easily in a crate, under a table or in the car.

When a bolster bed makes sense Raised edges provide support for the head and a sense of security. They appeal to dogs that sleep curled up, thin-coated breeds that like to burrow, and more anxious dogs that find an enclosed space reassuring. The bolster also helps to keep out draughts at floor level.

A compromise that works Many dogs change their sleeping position with the seasons — curling up in winter and stretching out in summer. A bed with a low bolster on three sides and an open front accommodates both.

Put it to the test Observe how your dog sleeps on the sofa or carpet for a week. If they are always looking for a cushion to rest their head on, choose a bolster bed. If they prefer to stretch out in the middle of the room, choose a mattress.
