Dog crates: choosing the right size, type and training approach

A crate is not a punishment. With the right training, it becomes a place your dog seeks out for peace and quiet — in the car, on holiday and at home.

Size Your dog must be able to stand with a straight back, turn around and lie fully stretched out inside the crate. A larger crate is not necessarily safer — during sudden braking, your dog may be thrown around inside it.

Type Rigid plastic or aluminium crates are suitable for cars and air travel. Fabric crates are lightweight and practical for use in holiday accommodation, but offer no protection in a collision. Wire crates are a good choice at home thanks to their airflow.

Mat The crate should contain a slim, firm mat that does not take up too much height or slip around. For puppies, choose a washable cover.

Training Start with an open crate in the living room and feed your dog inside it. Then close the door for a few seconds at a time, gradually increasing the duration. Never shut your dog inside as a punishment.

Air travel Rules vary between airlines. Book your dog's transport at the same time as your flight, and confirm the permitted dimensions for the specific crate model.
